Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that causes facial redness. It is a common but often misunderstood condition that is estimated to affect over 45 million people worldwide.
It mostly affects fair-skinned people. It begins as Erythema (flushing and redness) on the central face and across the cheeks, nose, or forehead but can also less commonly affect the neck and chest. As Rosacea progresses, it may venture of into a different type, creating cysts and pimple like sores, this is quite often confused with Acne.
Rosacea affects both sexes, but is almost three times more common in women, and has a peak age of onset between 30 and 60.
Treating Rosacea
There are many different treatments, which aid in the healing process of Rosacea type skin.
Rosacea symptoms can be managed with a combination of therapies including oral and topical medications (to treat the bumps, pimples and redness), IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment, (to rejuvenate the skin giving it more strength, remove visible blood vessels and reduce extensive redness) and appropriate skin care (to avoid irritating the skin).
A medical practitioner can diagnose Rosacea with a simple blood test and as the signs and symptoms of Rosacea vary from one patient to another – treatment needs to be tailored by a therapist for each individual case. Anti-Biotic’s are often prescribed for treatment but in many cases these are found to only work for a short period of time.
It is important to have a gentle skin cleansing regimen using non-irritating cleansers. Protection from the sun is important and daily use of a sunscreen of at least SPF 30+ containing a physical blocker such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is advised although chemical sunscreens, if non-irritating to the skin, are also an option.
While the actual cause of Rosacea is unknown and there is no cure, today treatment help is available that can control the signs and symptoms.
IPL and Rosacea
The latest IPL technology has been proven to be one of the most effective treatments for Rosacea today. Intense Pulsed Light machines offer one of the best treatments for Rosacea, in particular the Erythema (redness) of the skin.
They use light to penetrate the epidermis (outer layer) to target the capillaries in the dermis layer (deeper layer) of the skin.
The light is absorbed by oxy-hemoglobin which heat up causing damage to them, and causing them to be absorbed by the body’s natural defense mechanism.
The earlier blush and/or blood vessels of Rosacea are best treated by IPL. Although some lasers can also treat these problems, lasers are usually much more painfully and the skin usually bruises for up to two weeks.
IPL can routinely treat and improve the blush or blood vessels of Rosacea with the patient comfortable with the virtually painless treatment, and usually able to return to their normal activities within minutes after treatment. Treatment usually produces an immediate improvement, which frequently continues to improve for an additional 1 to 2 weeks after each treatment.
Bruising is very rare and occurs in less than 1% of treatments. Patients who have previously been treated with lasers, electric needles or Sclerotherapy injections are amazed at their results of the IPL treatment. No other method is available to treat this problem as safely, quickly, and comfortably.
IPL treatments also assist in healing the skin therefore giving it more strength and killing any bacteria within the skin to see an improvement with all the signs associated with Rosacea.
Patients with Rosacea will see a progressive reduction in redness with every treatment. The redness and flushing caused by Rosacea can be reduced by 80 to 90 percent. We here at The Beauty House have treated many clients with Rosacea with fantastic results.
All clients noticed a substantial change in their skin and commented that when they did experience Rosacea flair up it was progressively better than before and was continuing to improve with each treatment.
